Business Improvement District cancels Webster’s annual ‘Trick-or-Treat Trail’

Village also cancels its annual costume contest

Every year in October, Webster families come out to the Village of Webster for a weekend of Halloween fun, with the Village hosting a costume contest and local businesses handing out candy for the beloved “Trick-or-Treat Trail.” Both families and business owners dress up for the occasion; children get to go trick-or-treating twice in one year!

But due to COVID-19, the Webster Business Improvement District (BID) has decided to cancel this year’s trail. Additionally, the Village Office says it will not be hosting its classic costume contest.

“The group felt that it would be difficult to maintain social distancing,” Webster BID Chair Elena Bernardi shared in an email.

That’s not to say there will be no Webster Halloween events to look forward to in October. Challenger Miracle Field in Webster is hosting a “Not-So-Scary Halloween” event on Oct. 10, 11 a.m.-4 p.m., to benefit Best Buddies International, a non-profit organization that provides tangible services to those with developmental and intellectual disabilities. There will be music, games, a costume contest, crafts, raffles, pies, Kiss Me cookie sales, and more for the whole family to enjoy.

Attendance for this event is $5, and online registration is required (www.ticketsource.us/best-buddies). Attendees are also required to wear masks.

Another event, hosted by the Webster Parks & Recreation Department, “Pumpkins on Parade,” is slated for Oct. 24, 6:30-8 p.m., at the Recreation Center, 1350 Chiyoda Drive.

Details of the event, which are also posted on Facebook, are as follows:

“Drop off carved pumpkins to the Recreation Center on Friday, October 23 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., OR on Saturday, October 24 between 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. Come back Saturday evening to walk the path of illuminated pumpkins along the Chiyoda Trail! Kids will love finding their creation! End the evening with FREE cider and doughnuts from the Parks and Recreation Department!

For each Carved pumpkin, Participants will get a raffle ticket for the chance to win a fun prize!

LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS: Attn: Local organizations submit a business card with a carved pumpkin and we'll place a small sign next to it along the path with your name and logo! Bring a flashlight, but please, no pets.”

Halloween may look different this year, but the whole family can still have a “spook-tacular” time!
