Families enjoy ‘Summer Send-Off’ at Challenger Miracle Field

Webster Parks and Recreation hosted the event to kickoff the school year

It’s been a while since students walked the halls of Webster schools. And whether they’re opting for the full-time remote learning option or the in-person hybrid learning option, students are ready to get back to it.

To commemorate the occasion, the Webster Parks and Recreation Department hosted a “Summer Send-Off” - a “socially distanced Food Truck Picnic'' - on Sept. 9 at the Challenger Miracle Field playground behind Webster Town Hall.

Families enjoyed picnicking with food from The Meatball Truck and Wraps on Wheels. The weather was bright and sunny, making for a pleasant day at the park.

“We know with school starting soon, tensions are running high,” Chris Bilow, the Webster Parks and Recreation commissioner, shared in a press release for the event. “We want to wish families and children well before the summer comes to an end.”

Bilow joined Webster Parks and Recreation in March - just as the local lockdowns began due to COVID-19.

“‘Summer Send-Off’ is just a feel-good way for the community to connect… from a distance, of course!” Bilow added.

During the event, Parks and Recreation staff were on hand to answer any questions families had about upcoming programs. Free popsicles were also distributed to attendees, adding to the end-of-the-summer fun.

Attendees were required to wear masks when ordering their food.

The Webster Central School District officially welcomed its students back on Sept. 10.

According to a letter by Webster CSD Superintendent Carmen Gumina, written on August 14, approximately 11% of Webster students are receiving 100% remote instruction during the fall. Other students are receiving in-person hybrid instruction, which involves balancing students in groups, as in a.m. vs. p.m. and Mon./Thurs. vs. Tues./Fri.
