Over 4,000 voters recorded between Sat. and Wed. in Webster

The town shared an early voting update yesterday

Webster, NY - Early voting kicked off in Monroe County this past week, meaning voters were lined up outside the Webster Recreation Center to place their votes for their chosen candidates in the 2020 General Election.

According to an “Early Voting Update” posted on the Town of Webster website, more than 4,000 voters cast their ballots at the Webster Recreation Center Oct. 24 thru Oct. 28.

The breakdown of stats, as listed by Webster Town Supervisor Tom Flaherty, are as follows:

• Saturday 10/24 - 639 voters over 6 hours for an average of 107 per hour

• Sunday 10/25 - 648 voters over 6 hours for an average of 108 per hour

• Monday 10/26 - 745 voters over 8 hours for an average of 93 per hour

• Tuesday 10/27 - 1100 voters over 9 hours for an average of 122 per hour

• Wednesday 10/28 - 990 voters over 8 hours for an average of 124 per hour

New York State first introduced early voting in 2019, during which approximately 14,000 Monroe County residents cast their votes across the eight early voting locations in the span of 10 days, according to the supervisor.

This year, the county has 12 early voting locations. According to the supervisor, more than 57,000 Monroe County residents have already voted in the first five out of 10 days of early voting.

“At this pace, over 115,000 Monroe County residents will opt to early vote in 2020 compared to the 14,000 in 2019,” the supervisor notes in the update.

Webster did not offer an early voting location in 2019. The town coordinated with the Monroe County Board of Elections to set up an early voting site at the Webster Recreation Center for the 2020 election.

Some people have waited over an hour or so in line at the recreation center to cast their vote, in spite of the chilly weather. (Everyone socially distanced, of course.)

The supervisor says the Town of Webster worked with the Monroe County Board of Elections to increase the space being utilized inside the recreation center after Monday, which he says increased the average number of voters and decreased the wait time in line (as the above stats seem to reflect).

Not all of the voters who have cast their ballots at the Webster Recreation Center are necessarily Webster residents, as early voting sites allow anyone in the county to cast their vote. On Election Day, Nov. 3, voters will have to go to their designated polling site.
