Webster, NY - The Town of Webster has posted a job description for the position of Webster Police Chief on its website. Current Webster Police Chief Joseph Rieger is retiring later this month.


The position summary:


Chief of Police is a highly visible, administrative position involving direct responsibility for all police functions in the Webster Police Department. The duties of Chief of Police are performed in accordance with policies and objectives established by the Webster Town Board. The position is responsible for planning and directing law enforcement activities. Independent judgment is allowed for maintaining high standards of performance. The Chief of Police reports directly to and works under the general supervision of the Town Supervisor. General supervision is exercised over sworn and civilian staff.


Qualified candidates must have either a high school diploma or an equivalency diploma, as well as at least 24 months of permanent competitive status in an organized police department in the position of Police Lieutenant or higher rank in a town, village, or city police department, or county sheriff’s office in the State of New York, or the New York State Police.


Rieger has been the Webster Chief of Police for six years, and a member of the Webster Police Department for more than 31 years.

“It is hard for me to reduce to words the amount of dedication I have to the people of Webster and the noble profession of law enforcement,” Rieger stated in a press release announcing his retirement back in early December. “I am thankful for all the opportunities that have been extended to me throughout my career.”

The deadline to apply for the position of Webster Chief of Police is Jan. 15, 2021.
