Webster celebrates Memorial Day at Webster Rural Cemetery

Webster, NY - The sun shone brightly over Webster Rural Cemetery on Memorial Day as the community gathered for a Remembrance Ceremony. Since there was no parade this year due to COVID, the community brought their blankets and lawn chairs to pay their respects to all those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

“We not only honor our fellow comrades, but we also honor the privilege of meeting here without censorship,” American Legion Post Commander Dan MacDonald said in his opening comments.

As part of the ceremony, the American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary, Sons of the American Legion, Webster Police Department, and Webster firemen all placed wreaths in front of the American Flag in respect for their fallen comrades.

Respect was also paid to those who are prisoners of war (POW) or missing in action (MIA).

“In a world torn with strife, we are thankful that we are able to hold services such as these without fear,” said Commander MacDonald.

The ceremony concluded with the traditional “Taps” trumpet, the ceremonious firing of three rifle volleys, the Star-Spangled Banner, and the raising of the American Flag.
